Writing Desk and Sanity in Graveyard Keeper 2
Unlock the Writing Desk in the Theology branch and build it in the basement beneath your house; the hatch is beside the bed. Writing Stories consumes insanity, so a purple brain icon with a red cross usually means the Keeper is too sane. Full ordinary energy does not replace the required insanity resource.
How to unlock and use the Writing Desk
- Open the house basement. Look for the hatch beside the bed. The location reply identifies the basement and Theology branch, but only guesses that quests gate access. If the hatch is locked, check your active early quests; no exact unlock quest is verified here.
- Check the Theology technology branch. Unlock the Writing Desk technology when its requirements become available.
- Build the desk downstairs. Use the basement construction interface and place it in an available work area.
- Choose a Story recipe. Supply the ordinary ingredients shown in the interface and check the separate purple-brain requirement.
- Bring enough insanity. If the red-cross brain icon remains, building again or restoring ordinary energy will not solve a missing-insanity requirement.
Sanity and insanity are not ordinary energy
The reply that resolved the reported blockage says: You need insanity to write stories. It consumes that beside your energy. Drink soldier's brew, eat flesh, or increase your insanity in other ways.
The original poster then acknowledged not realizing that items could need insanity. This supports a missing-resource diagnosis in that report, not a developer-confirmed desk bug.
Practical check: read every icon in the recipe panel. If materials and energy are present but the purple brain remains crossed out, the missing requirement is the current insanity amount.
How to get insanity for a writing session
- Inspect Soldier’s Brew or flesh. These are the two named options in the community reply. Read the item tooltip in your build before consuming anything; do not confuse restoring ordinary energy or sanity with adding the insanity the recipe spends.
- Test one item, not a stack. Record insanity before and after using it, then reopen the same Story recipe. If the crossed-out icon clears and the other requirements are met, craft one Story and check the remaining resource before queuing more.
- If the icon stays crossed out, compare the numbers. The item may not have supplied enough for that recipe. Check its displayed cost, ingredients and energy separately. Do not rebuild the desk merely because one consumable was insufficient.
Evidence limit: exact insanity gain, acquisition routes for these items, and per-Story costs are not verified by this thread. It gives named options to inspect, not a guarantee that one drink or one piece of flesh funds a whole writing batch.
When it may be a bug
The reported failure after taking a +4 Mastery Writing Desk talent was initially suspected to be a bug. The player had already tried removing an amulet and rebuilding the desk; the later exchange instead identified insanity as the missing requirement. That thread does not prove the talent breaks Story crafting.
If crafting still fails with every requirement visibly met, save and reload as a diagnostic step, not a promised fix. Capture the recipe panel and insanity before and after a consumable, then report the recipe, platform, build number and affected save through the in-game report tool or Bug Reports forum. Note whether the failure occurs on one Story recipe or all of them so it can be reproduced without rebuilding your room.
